Colombo at a glance
When to visit
Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons — west coast (May-Sep) and east coast (Oct-Jan). For Colombo and the south/west coast, December to March is best. For the east coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay), May to September. Hill country (Ella, Kandy) is pleasant year-round.
Getting there
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is in Katunayake, 35 km north of Colombo. A taxi to Colombo Fort/Pettah takes 45-60 minutes (LKR 3,000-5,000, INR 800-1,400). The airport expressway reduces travel time. No rail link from the airport yet.

Quick answers about Colombo
How much does a flight to Colombo cost from India?
One-way flights from Chennai/Bangalore to Colombo cost INR 4,000-9,000 (1.5 hours). From Delhi/Mumbai, INR 7,000-15,000 (via Chennai or direct on SriLankan Airlines). IndiGo and SpiceJet offer direct flights from South Indian cities.
Do Indian citizens need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Indians get a free ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) for 30 days. Apply at eta.gov.lk — approval within 24 hours. You need a confirmed return ticket and hotel booking. Extensions up to 90 days possible at the immigration office in Colombo.
How many days are enough for Sri Lanka?
7-10 days for a full circuit: 1-2 days Colombo, 2 days Kandy (Temple of the Tooth), 1-2 days Ella (train, hiking), 1 day Sigiriya/Dambulla, 2-3 days south coast (Galle, Mirissa for whale watching). 5 days works for Colombo + hill country.
When is the cheapest time to visit Sri Lanka?
May-June (west coast monsoon) has the lowest fares from India. April (Sinhala New Year) has good deals. Avoid December-January (peak European tourist season). The shoulder months of October and March balance price and weather.
Is Sri Lanka safe for Indian tourists?
Yes, Sri Lanka is safe and welcoming to Indian tourists. Cultural similarities make it comfortable. English is widely spoken. Roads are well-maintained but winding in hill country. Use reputable taxi apps (PickMe) instead of negotiating with tuk-tuk drivers.
